From Haunts Like These: The Legacy of Stewart County Artist and Poet
Thomas Jefferson Flanagan
August 28, 2010 – February 13, 2011
Columbus Museum History Gallery
Columbus, GA--Stewart County, Georgia native Thomas Jefferson Flanagan was a talented and prolific self-taught artist, poet and songwriter.
While he lived the majority of his life in Atlanta, Flanagan was heavily influenced by his upbringing in the Chattahoochee Valley and drew on experiences in this area for both inspiration and solace throughout his life. His work reveals him to be a keen observer of this region’s people and natural surroundings who possessed a deep attachment to the land.
“The world that Thomas Jefferson Flanagan grew up in within southwestern Georgia is reflected in his paintings of the fields, people, animals and life of the land that he knew all too well,” Tom Butler, Director of the Columbus Museum, says.
“Flanagan’s poetic use of panoramic space and his love of bright color combine to make festive paintings of optimism and joy,” Butler adds.
From Haunts like These: The Legacy of Stewart County Artist and Poet Thomas Jefferson Flanagan, the first exhibition to chronicle the full spectrum of Flanagan’s creativity, explores his life and remarkable career as an editor, minister and teacher in an effort to provide context to his artwork and introduce him to a new audience. Nearly two dozen of his original paintings, many depicting local scenes, will be featured, along with a sampling of his many award-winning publications.
This exhibition is made possible by the generous support of the W.C. Bradley Company.
