    Innovative Minimalist Artist to Create Exhibition at the Columbus Museum!
    Re: Re: Re: New Work by Avantika Bawa
  3.       August 12 – December 12

  4.

  5. Columbus, Georgia – Acclaimed visual artist Avantika Bawa is literally breaking new artistic ground when she arrives at the Columbus Museum in August!

  6. For nearly a decade, Bawa has been working with site-specific “interventions.” These works decode the hidden meaning in a site’s unique characteristics -- whether architectural, historical, social or environmental -- and amplifies it.

  7. In Re: Re: Re: New Work by Avantika Bawa, to be on view at the Columbus Museum August 12th through December 12th, the artist will address the history and architecture of the Columbus Museum; the geography of its surrounding areas; and the cataloguing of art conducted in the institution’s back offices. Various objects from the Museum’s storage areas will be re-purposed to create a transformed visitor experience in the gallery that also hints at the happenings ‘behind the scenes.”
    “Avantika Bawa’s architecturally inspired installations call to mind some of the more dynamic instances of where a museum invites an artist in to ‘mine’ the collection through new eyes,” says Columbus Museum Director Ton Butler.

    “But in this case, it is the facility itself that the artist seeks out to create her dialogue. In keeping with our history of showcasing young and significant talent in our region, Ms. Bawa’s site-specific artwork for the Columbus Museum pays homage to our structure and to the Museum’s history.”

    Avantika Bawa is a visual artist and curator. Until recently, she was based out of Atlanta, Georgia and taught Fine Arts classes at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) Atlanta campus. Bawa creates new territory between sculpture and painting, similar to her ability to navigate the borders between two cultures – Indian and American.  She is influenced by:

    Minimalism, which attempts to reduce art to the basic geometric shapes with the fewest colors, lines and textures;
    Installation art, where the artist creates temporary, site-specific, three-dimensional works to transform the experience of a space; and Intervention art, which attempts to make people aware of a situation of which they had no previous knowledge.
    Bawa earned an MFA in painting from the Art Institute of Chicago and a BFA in painting from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, India. She has exhibited nationally and internationally in the United States, Canada and India.
